Hi, I'm new here and it's nice to find a discussion board that has more up to date postings and is active. At any rate, I set out to confirm what's working and what is not working on my sequential lights. Here's what is happening and has done so since I bought the car. The sequential tail lights work fine, but the cam-unit in the trunk runs all the time (whether the turn signal lever is engaged or not) and the "flasher" light in the overhead console is lit constantly, unless the right or left turn signal is engaged. Here is what I've done thus far.
I dismounted the cam-based sequencer, cleaned the contacts with WD40 and installed it back into the Tbird and it works. However, as before cam turns continuously no matter what the position of the signal lever is in. However, when you push down or pull up, the signal does make it to the back of the tail light and it sequences correctly. When the lever is not engaged, there are no lights lit at the tail, but the cam continues to turn. Additionally, when the turn lever is engaged, you can hear the actual "blink" somewhere in the dashboard, not sure where that flasher is located, but I can clearly hear a blinking sound from the dash, just the right of the console and the dashboard lights blink accordingly. However, here's a something that I noticed. The "Flasher" light on the overhead console lights up all the time except when either the right or left signal is being engaged. I'm unsure what makes it light up all the time, then not light up when engaged. Would this be an issue with the emergency/hazard light relay? And if so, where is it located and can it be replaced with a NOS part? I'm lost as to why that light is on then off when the signal is engaged or the hazard lights are on. So here are the troubleshooting facts as I know them. 1. The overhead console flasher light remains glowing at all times, unless you depress the turn signal lever either way or run the hazard lights. 2. The cam-based system runs continuously, even when the turn lever is not engaged. 3. The cam-based system does operate the tail lights correctly when properly engaged and the signal is shown at the tail light correctly. 4. I hear a single click sound immediately when the signal lever is depressed. The location of that sound is just behind the rear seat on the driver's side. I understand that is a relay to the sequencer and directional flasher relay. 5. When the turn signal is engaged, the dash light blinks in accordance with the sound coming from the under the dash. I know I've hit you with a lot of information, but let me know what you think. At this point, I'm lost as to what to do. I cannot have the flasher light in the overhead console lit up all the time. I cannot have that cam running all the time either (I do know there are electronic equivalents available). I'm really needing some guidance. Any help is greatly appreciated. Go to the home page for this site and scroll down the left side for "diagram index" You will find wiring diagrams for the turn signals and the emergency flasher. They should help. Taking a fast look at the diagrams, it may be the turn signal indicator relay. Try unpluging it and see what happens. Good luck.

Jim,
Thanks so much. I will do that. These sequential lights are a little confusing for me. I'm used to just a single blinking light. I admit they are cool when functional but somewhat of a nightmare to troubleshoot. I'll let you know my outcome on this. Matthew Shaver Spfld, IL 1968 Ford Thunderbird 2-door Laundau |
