Birdman, just wanted to say thank you for all of your advice and help. I found the tag which identifies CID etc. It states the engine is a 390 / year 66 so i thank you so much. I also checked the crankshaft and it read C6AE. I feel so much better now! Now i will get it rebuilt. As a matter of fact, what is the norm for getting an engine rebuilt $$$$.
thanks, terence

Terence, Kind of depends on how much you have done. I had a '66 428 completely rebuilt and since most of the cost is labor I guess the cost is about the same. On my engine, the block, head, intake, crank, cam, balance wheel are original but were reworked. Almost everything else is new (can't remember details now about pistons and valve but all the rods are new). This all came to about $2,000, St. Louis prices.

The shop will paint the engine for you also. If you are going for close to original, you will need to tell him treat it like a '63. For '66 the engines switched from black to "Corporate Blue". Check the concours specs on the Thunderbird Ranch website if you want something handy. FYI. Enjoy

Vance, sorry i forgot to thank you also, you were a big help to me!! I will check the concours specs and go from there. 2,000.00 Buckaroos. Let me ask you this, today i called around to some reputable shops from what friends tell me, i have been quoted 1200.00 to 1600.00 but what concerns me, is them using same parts that probably should be replaced, ive heard some nightmare stories about that! I will keep calling around and do my homework before allowing my engine to be rebuilt, but happy to say, I am truly own my way to getting this gem back on the road! TRUST ME, I WILL ENJOY!
THANKS, TERRY

Terence, I should have added it is possible, since the 428ci is a little more rare than the 390, the parts costs are a bit higher. I did not check that out because it is what is for the engine you have. Also be sure they harden the valve seats. I think most all shops do this now as a default but, just in case, ask. This allows you to run unleaded gas without a lead additive without a problem.
