I am replacing the sending unit for my 65 TBird. It is the one with the low fuel warning light. If someone has replaced theirs before maybe they can tell me whether I need a new locking ring and gasket. Is there a fuel sending unit filter somewhere? I know there is a fuel filter attached to the bottom of the fuel pump. I just want to be sure I purchase all the right parts. thanks

The ones i bought off the suppliers came with the rubber o ring seal and the screen filter that is attached to the end of the pick up tube on the sender, So it's everything you need.

Thanks Bob P. I will check to make sure the o ring and filter are attached to the sending unit when I purchase it. Did you have any trouble getting the locking ring off or did you buy a new one to attach the sending unit to the gas tank? I am wondering if I should take the car in to someone who works on gas tanks? I dont want to catch on fire and I cant tell how much gasoline is still in my tank? How did you jack up the car? Did you use axle jacks?

First i filled the tank up then siphoned out half, 11 gals. Next i put the car up on four car ramps. The lock ring taps right off. I put a few dabs of grease on the o ring to hold it in place. Put the new one in using the old lock which should be good. the new one has an alinging tab on it. checked the gauge to make sure it read halfv a tank. You may have to pull it back out and bend the float a little. Good time to put a new hose to the sender too.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and especially to Bob P. I am now checking out the constant voltage regulator. I check the voltages at the three gauges (oil, fuel and temperature) and I get a pulsating or oscillating voltage that doesnt seem to be much more then 2.5 volts at the most. I noticed in the shop manual it says it should oscillate between 0 and 10 volts dc at the gauges. It also says a radio suppression choke is in series with the constant voltage regulator. Has anyone checked the voltage on their gauges?
