Hello folks... my first post...

I've replaced my window motors, gears and relay recently since they were all shot. Now that I have it all re-installed, I believe I've missed something since the windows seem to be struggling to get all the way up. I've adjusted the track and lubed everything but it still seems sluggish.

I believe I may have not set the spring tension correctly for the regulator but I can't find any GOOD explanation of how this is done and the Ford manual's coverage on this is less than to be desired.

Can anyone walk me through this?

I can offer some help - but for a '67, to which I recently added a window motor. So if yours is similar, and you have a flat spring assisted regulator, read on...

The tightly-wound coil spring needs to wrap almost one whole revolution (hold it with something poking through one of the armature holes), then bolt up the motor. This means that you have to hook the spring against the tab and then sweep the regulator armature around about 300-degrees. I recommend getting another person to help because that spring-loaded regulator can easily take off a finger or two if it gets squirrelly on you. Also, make sure you have the spring(s) wound in the correct direction (easy to get them backwards) so that they help with the lifting instead of hindering it.

If the '66 window regulators are different, well then I guess you can disregard all of this. Good luck!

Thanks Ace..

I think they are the same and the process sounds like what I need to do to make this right.

It also sounds like a real a PIA.

You would think Ford would have covered this better in the manual.

Ok... so it looks like you need to preload the spring by sweeping the armature around 300 degrees and then pinning the spring so you can bolt the motor up. The spring tension must put force towards the regulator armature so it wants to push the window up to help the motor.

I wondered how this was done... Before, I bolted the inner motor bolt just loose enough to drop the motor a bit, pushed on the regulator armature to get some tension and then lifted the motor to engage the gear. It sounds like I was pretty far off regarding the needed spring tension.

Wonder how they did it in the factory?
