Fuel Sending Unit

Got the bird 3-yrs ago and it read 3/4 when filled. Over a few months time it decreased to a constant empty. The LowFuel never worked. This summer I dropped the tank & pulled the sending unit. The brass float had a hole (common I understand). I then got two (thinking one was defective) new sending units w/LF indicator. Now the fun...

When I plug any of the 3-units in to emulate it's installed, it must move 1/3 the way up to start moving the guage, but max's at 3/4 unless I force it past the stop. LowFuel never comes on. HOWEVER, when I ground out the connecter ends, the fuel guage reads Full and the LF comes On. Cables all test good.

Lastly, I ohm the sending unit, they all read similar. The original unit has a slightly shorter range by about 15 ohms than the two new units. My thoughts are (1) is there a calibration that needs to be done, (2) is the in-dash constant-voltage unit malfunctioning - although appears it is not tied to the LF sensing circuit, (3) it will all act okay when it's fully installed and in use as intended, (4) nothing I can do, (5) you got another solution - I hope.

** UPDATE 9/10/05: Well, I have the tank and new sending unit back in the car. Twice I ran it to 1/2 a tank and filled using 6.5 gals. A far cry from 10/20 gallons, but at least I now have a working reference. It may take some time till I test the "low fuel" real time.

If anyone has been through similar I would appreciate the acknowledgement. Thanks, Rob

before you put the new sender in you should fill the tank to the top. Then siphon out ten gals. of fuel. Put the sender in and bend the float rod near the float till the gauge reads 1/2 then see if it works right. should be done on level ground. If the guage doesn't go to emty or full then i would suspect a bad guage or yours needs adjustment. May have to put the sender in a few times to get it right. It doesn't sound like it but there is a low fuel relay up above the fuse panel.
