Is it necessary to remove the entire system in order to get to the core? This is for a 61 Bird

I would be interested in hearing about your heater core removal - the 64 tbird that I have does not have the core nor heater box / fan installed - the heater hoses have been bypassed in the engine compartment snd I am thinking about having it reinstalled.
