66'- steering column "sloppy"

My 66 Hardtop steering column is extremely "sloppy" with play. When the wheel is pulled to the right, for driving position I stll have a good 1-2" play from left to right. Looking under colum I note a track that the wheel rides. Pulling wheel to right (driving position) It stops just short of end of track. Is it normally to drop off this track and lock into position. Also the Neutral switch is very sensitive, constantly have to pull shifter into park position to enage starter.
Tks,
Greg

Your shifter tube bushings are shot. There is a bushing at the bottom of the column(in the engine compartment) that driues out and falls apart. Do you have up and down play in the steering wheel also? I would also replace the shifter handle as the end in the column housing will have worn a groove in it from running on the detent plate. Alot of guys say to replace the detent also but I have never had one worn out. Only problem I ever encountered was one of the mtg screws backed out allowing it to move. After that is all done re adjust your neutral safety switch and you will be like new. With your symptoms watch out with leaving the car running by itself as it can actually fall into gear. It isnt a fun job but if you are mechaniclly inclined you can do it. I can give you a few tips if you are going to try it, let me know.

Thanks Dan & Jim. You gave me some great information on my steering column issues. The article on TBirds by Nick is excellent. I will look at addressing these possible causes as soon as I get a moment. (Working out my 428 rough engine issues currently) Dan would definetly like to take you up on your offer with some help, tips. Lower bushing looks a bit confusing, challenging.
