head gasket problemGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()

While someone was using my 63 when I wasn't around, the lower rad hose exploded. They continued driving the car home. I put a new lower hose on it and topped off the coolant, only to find the coolant ended up in the oil pan.The head gasket burned between #1 and #2cyl.I used a straightedge and feeler gauge on the head and block and found no warpage.I reassembled the top end with all new gaskets, and topped off with water. After a couple of weeks of doing other repairs on the car, guess what? Water ended up in oil pan.The engine never really got up to operating temp, only briefly run a couple of times. Question is....Is the FE motor more prone to crack the head or the block? TIA Jim

The FE is not any more prone to warpage or cracking than any other. Your leakage may be coming from the intake manifold gasket. The corners are some times tricky to seal. If you used Felpro "Print-o-seal" intake gaskets, you may as well begin pulling the intake. Victor or Ford OE type gaskets are much better. Be sure that the head gasket is oriented correctly as well. The coolant slot goes to the rear. You can visually verify this by noting if there is a square cut corner visable between the head and block at the lower front corner of the head.

Thanks for the info!! Yep,It's got Felpros on the intake!! I guess I'll have to pull it apart anyway. Thanks for the tip on which gaskets are good. It's getting water in the same cyls. as before so I must have missed smething. When I get that head off I'll have it checked at the machine shop-I should have done that in the first place-I probably wouldn't be doing it all again!! Thanks again!!

Sounds good, Jim. To be clear, I am not condeming Felpro, just for what ever reason, the "Print-o-seal" intake gaskets do not work well on the FE. Many people have had problems with sealing around the intake ports. That said, I would not hesitate to use their other gaskets. Good luck!
