I had a simular problem with my 61 T-bird. It came down to being 2 things.
The accelerating pump on the carburetor were leaking gas when used. The gas dripped down on the hot intake where it vapourized and causing the smell.
The front cowel drain hoses were all dried up and let the engine smells easially in to the passenger compartment.
