66 Bird Brakes

I recently completely replaced virtually my entire brake system to include all new brake lines; had my brake booster rebuilt by Booster Dewey; replaced the seals in the porportioning valve, purchased and installed a rebuilt master cylinder, new rotors, rebuilt calipers (Pat Wilson's T-Bird parts), new rear wheel cylinders & brake shoes/attaching harware, etc.

My problem is that although the brakes apply very well now (maybe too sensitive), after I take foot pressure off the brake pedal the brakes remain applied for a second and the pedal is slow to return.

This makes the car tricky and dangerous to drive. Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem may be and what to do it about it?

I had the same problem with my '66 when I replaced the master cylinder. The push rod from the booster to the master cylinder needs to be adjusted. It is probably too long. Check the adjustment instructions that came with the master cylinder, if you still have them.

I've had good results with screwing the push rod out just so it touches the plunger in the master cylinder, Not pressing it. Also when you adjust your rear brakes be sure parking brake cables are loose. If you can power bleed the brakes thats best.

My '64 does this too, what works for me is to just know that when I push the brakes I have to pull the pedal back up with my foot, I do it out of habit now. My '63 also had the same thing going on, just figured it was the nature of the beast.

Dans65,

I got my calipers at Pat Wilson's Thunderbird Parts and he had mine on the shelf ready to ship.

He is on the internet at www.wilsontbird.com/

They are rebuilts and were $115 a piece and there is a $75 core charge a piece which you get back when you return rebuildable calipers.
