Could the filter in the tank be sucking up dirt and sludge and clogging after the car runs a few minutes? After the car shuts off it looses suction and the stuff drops off the tank filter. Just a thought.

The electric pump isin't going to do much more than the stock pump. The car is getting to that age where tank rust can start to be a concern. I would as Bob suggested start there. What you could do is make sure you have some fuel in the tank, crank it until you know the fuel line and bowls are full. Disconnect the fuel line from the pump at the carb side and use a bolt or similar to plug it. Slip on a short piece of fuel hose on the outlet side of pump and find a clean clear container or similar, put your discharge hose into it. At this point extinguish all cigs, pipes and the like, fire up the beast and let it pump some fuel into your container. Look at the volume, pressure and then what the fuel looks like and look for sediment or rust. That's where I would start. Let us know what happens and save your money on that electric for now. Good Luck

It's actuall not as bad as you would think. The worst part is the dirt, I haven't found a place on a car that collects more crap to fall in your eyes than the very back. Hopefully you won't have to do it, think positive for now. If you do make sure you get you level down as low as possible, not a problem with todays fuel prices..lol If you go under wear some goggles and zip up your coveralls...to the chin!!

Sounds like your making good progress!! You can always make a gasket for the sender. You can get some gasket material from the parts store and cut out your own. Often times you can find a spray can cap or bowel or glass to use as a trace template if you can't save any of the original. If your careful you might be able to save the original and even reuse it. The problem with the tank now is not only cleaning it but sealing it. You might check with your local radiator shop about boiling it for you, they may also be able to seal it. You could also find a self applied sealer like they have at eastwood.com and do it yourself. I also have seen new tanks for your year on ebay for like $140.00. It may be cheaper to buy new, that is going to be up to your budget. Good Luck and keep us in the loop.

Dang..hey the good news is you don't have to crawl under the tank!! Try taking both ends of the line off at the pump and see if you're getting suction on the tank end with your finger over the fitting, do same on engine side and check for pressure out when cranking the engine over (remove coil wire, no gas spills). When you pull the pump off you can push the lever arm in and release with your finger over the in and out and feel for same. I wonder if perhaps the pin sheared off the fuel pump eccentric under the timing cover or the eccentric is grooved and worn out either case the lever on the pump would not be depressed as the cam and eccentric go round and round. The above tests will confirm or deny all of that, then again you may just say "who cares" and bolt on an electric. Keep us posted
