My 1962 tbird when driving for awhile has hot gas coming through the push on type oil cap. The fumes gets into the car and causing some to get a headache. Car has 80,000 miles on it and was wndering if there was away to resolve this hot gas issue. Is it possible to install a mustang type oil cap and have this gas go back through the air filter cover into the carb?

I have original tbird scrip valve covers so there is now way to pipe it back into the motor.

It sounds as though the basic problem is excessive "blow-by". A compression test and a cylinder leak down test will confirm this. The only permanent solution is to rebuild the engine because the rings are not sealing properly. In 1962, Ford was transitioning to a Positive Crankcase Ventilation system in their engines. T-birds got the new system in the '61 models intended for sale in California. Your '62 should have a PCV valve plumbed into a hole that faces rear ward in the center of the back edge of the intake manifold. Through these various fittings, PCV valve and hoses the crankcase fumes are meant to be burned in the engine. However, if the volume of blow-by is excessive, the system can't keep up and the excess is pumped out of the most convenient exit, i.e. the breather cap. It is also possible that your 'bird has draft tube instead of a PCV system which is actually even worse because there is no positive means to evacute those fumes or burn them. A PCV system can be back fitted to any engine regardless of age but your main problem seems to be worn out rings.

Try adding a quart of Rislone. I did it and it freed up my rings --I was getting some smoke.
