There is a relay for the windows that mounts to the cowl panel just to the rt side of center. Do you have power there? Pull up a tad on the shift lever and see if the wheel will slide. The column bushings are probably shot

Richard, The slide mechanism is really pretty simple. Contort yourself underneath and check to see if a lever pushes up on the locking mechanism when you put the car in park. This is adjustable and may need adjusting. The slide mechanism is trough that is a dirt and crud accumulator. You may have a bunch of crud built up in the slide. I removed mine and cleaned everything and now works fine. Good luck, Vince

If you change the upper and lower column bushings you can eliminate the lifting up on the lever to start the car problem. It also helps with really getting the car in park since these are notorious for falling out of park

I have found a mirror on a rod (The type you can get at K-Mart etc) is a real help to see what your column sliding mechanism is doing. Also if you're brave you may want to look at the detent and shifter to check there in good order - the last thing you want is for the shifter to drop from Park into Reverse. BTW Who is the idiot trying to peddle low-grade porn on this site?? (as last post)
