I am pulling the 429 out of my 71 Thunderbird. I need to rebuild the engine. Looking for suggestions on how to rebuild. I would like the engine to stay stock looking but I may want to try and gain a little more horsepower while the engine is out. Should I change the cam to a 460? I understand that basically the only difference between a 429 and a 460 is the cam shaft. Looking for suggestions from extreme to moderate or just keep the engine stock. Keep in mind that Pony Carburetors just rebuilt my original carburetor and I would like to use it in the rebuild. Thanks.

Bob P. Thanks for the reply. I went to the sight. There is a lot of information there but at first glance nothing specific about rebuilding a 429.If anyone can give me some ideas I would be grateful.

The current issue of Hemmings has a nice tech article on the 429. Mostly centered around the two variants of Cobra Jets but still good history. Nothing on how to rebuild one but some discussion on the horsepower changes mods can bring.

Good luck with your rebuilt carb from Pony. they rebuilt one for me, and was worse than when I first sent it to them. There should be a book out there titled "How to rebuild your big block ford". Might have some ideas there. Mike B '69 Fordor

Pony Carb rebuilt my carb and my 390 runs awesome now - I believe the key to a successful rebuild is the existing engine conditions and making sure you follow all the install instructions right to the letter!

X2 on the How to Rebuild Your Big Block Ford. Wonderful book even guys who have been building FE's and 385's for years still refer to that book. Should help you a lot! Just my .02.

The "Thunder Jet 429" replaced the FE Thunderbird engines in 1968. It is completely different from the previously available 390 or 428. The link provided above is to the FE forum so it is of limited use to learn about the 429/460 motors. The 429 and 460 egines are part of the "385" or "Lima" series of engines. The main difference between the 429 and the 460 is the crankshaft, not the cam. The stroke on the 429 is 3.59" vs. 3.85" in the 460. Re. the book, "How to Rebuild Big-Block Ford Engines" by Steve Christ, it is specifically written about the FE series engines only. It is a good resource but be aware that it contains a few errors too.
