I once tried a Custom Auto-Sound replacement. It is now in a landfill somewhere.
I had the original am radio "refitted(?)". It is now am/fm. The face plate is as original and it sounds very nice. I had a jack added to plug in a cd/cassette/mp3 player also.
There's a place in Blaine, MN that does this. If I remember correctly, it cost about $400. Their name is S/M Electro Tech. They are a frequent advertiser in Old Cars Weekly.
Good Luck.
